Get Notorious Magazine | February

February, 2011

The older you get the shorter years become. Why is this you ask?

I take you back to 6 years old. Running in the backyard, swimming lessons, sleep overs, tantrums. This whole year is only a sixth of your life. Now I take you to the ripe old age of 14. Making out, spin the bottle, "sleep overs", parties, movies, making out. Did I say making out?!? This year is a fourteenth of you life.

Now let's fast forward the the old age of 35. Back aches, work, bills, drinking, partying, rent, lets just say responsibility (even to a small degree)... This is one year is a thirty fifth of your life. Depressing isn't it! So why not take this moment by your 'short hairs' and Get Notorious!

This newsletter hails from the heavens of St Jeromes. If you like what you see, you can go backwards in time at www.getnotmag.com. For advice or information on life, love, luck or science email howdy@getnotorious.com.

Acid Over Easy

Backwoods Gallery is proud to announce Acid Over Easy, a solo show by Zach Johnsen featuring the continuation of the explosive "Acid in the Ice Cream" series.

Acid Over Easy is a frenetic show of new works on paper exploring a break in habits of everyday man and woman. Artist Zach Johnsen presents all new drawings in graphite and watercolor of human forms in moments of suspended movement and anxiety .. capturing continuous explosive moments on one piece of paper. Acid Over Easy is a world of 9 to 5ers in moments of pure revelation. It is a real estate agent confronted by spirits that just became visible. It is hidden energies that tug at the back of the neck. It is psychadelic purple drink in the water cooler. It is sudden moments of inspiration. It is the catalyst that makes time stand still for a moment. It is getting in touch with nature for the first time. It is the realization that the monotonous routines of day to day living isn't all there is to experience.. that there is so much power within ourselves and all around us just waiting for us to notice....

The Acid trip continues...

Toro Y Moi

Toro Y Moi at Workers Mistletone proudly presents the first Australian tour by South Carolina daydreamy electronic-pop innovators, Toro Y Moi. Led by 24 year old producer/musician Chaz Bundick, Toro Y Moi come to our shores as a trio to fill the dancefloor with the hazy and timeless beats of this year's sublime debut, Causers Of This (out now on Mistletone through Inertia). Wire magazine recently described Toro Y Moi as "demonstrating a joy in the elastic properties of rhythm and sound that immediately recalls Flying Lotus, J Dilla and Madlib", whilst the Sydney Morning Herald praised Toro Y Moi for "blending patches of R&B, indie rock, electro dance and a good dose of psychedelica to create soundscapes that are as beautiful as they are disorientating".

Sinoia Caves

Sinoia Caves is another name for the analog synth wizard Jeremy Schmidt, who is also a principal member of the critically-lauded, maximal-rock band called Black Mountain. The Enchanter Persuad- ed is his solo debut full-length. It is an ambient psych masterpiece, bringing to mind, as one writer puts it, "the warmth and majestic epic swales" of Florian Fricke's Popul Vuh plus a "little Rick Wakeman and Kraftwerk."

In addition to his solo music and his contributions as part of Black Mountain, Schmidt is also known for his work as former member of the celebrated space rock band

Lachlan Anthony

Sydney born, Melbourne based Lachlan Anthony woke up to imagination about the same time he lost his virginity, a dual birth, he was maybe 18 and has been making sculpture and installation ever since.

"I started by spending hours holed away in a suburban loft shuffling domestic items and furniture into new configura- tions, eventually it led to a sculpture practice. I have always been fascinated by the deconstruction of functional objects and the act of breathing congruous magic into the banal." Whe asked what inspires him, Lachlan replied, "I guess it would be fair to say I am inspired by social realities that both disgust and perplex me. I am interested in why people choose to spend their lives the way they do, whether in free- dom or control and in particular those that through unique life craft discover and share new modes of reality."

Ponyfish Island

So the Ponyfish Island has set sail up the Yarra river with its liquor license onboard. The party has been a fantastic ride with beautiful sunshine in our faces, super hot staff and delectable treats to eat. Our 3 great explorers and pioneer founders have successfully secured the best new spot in the whole of Mel- bourne. Our Captain Matti is ensuring that all the fauna and flora is kept alive and thriving upon the Island. Join us in the future for squid catching competitions and social excitement.

Come down to eat, drink and be merry (and see what you seek floating down our Yarra river). Venture down to our magical land and see if you find Reggie on our Island.

This is NOT a Film Festival

This is Not a Film Festival is the side project of film maker Ben Andrews, who became fed up with the lack of exposure that short films get, and grew tired of the competi- tive nature of film festivals and the circuit's cliches and bitching. He now screens the best of Australian (specifically Melbourne) made short films, monthly, at 1000 £ Bend's cosy 'Noises in the Attic' cinema, for the pure purpose of enjoying them.

Those of you present, may remember seeing the (non film festival) Melbourne premiere of Shaun Tan's The Lost Thing, just days before it was nominated for an Academy Award. Coincidence? We didn't think so either.

Who knows what may happen to your film after entry to Australia's fastest growing anti-film-festival short screen event?

2011 sees the event opening in Sydney, where we're told "it all happens". What "All", and the exact definition of a "happening" is, we are still un- sure of, however screening your film at 'this is NOT a film festival' would get it seen by a large audience of very enthusiastic short film goers. The best part is, they aren't vicious fascists choosing what they screen. It has virtually no entry requirements - it is just about promoting and screening interesting, original films. They even screened a film called 'Cheeses of Nazareth' once. Edgy.
