October, 2010

We live in a world where 'good causes' have become a matter of opinion. Our generation, the proverbial gluttonous German boy, wanders blindly in the chocolate shop of 'good causes'; overwhelmed and often confused by the selection and sweet aromas that pervade our sensitive olfactories.

What will he feast upon? What is worth his pocket money? These are questions pondered by the seeker of 'good causes'. And what of the chocolatier? Who is this enigmatic charlatan who sets up this ridiculous amount of 'good causes' for us to choose from? Who is this scheming vagabond, who, despite our selections, renders us sleepless and bloated with guilt, despite our thoughtful selection? Ultimately, many of us have considered that the cost of entering the shop is a price too dear to pay for your conscience. Thus the tactics of dodging errant phone calls, petitioning university students and coin shaking, traffic light dwelling folk has developed as a crucial skills set.

In the past, a 'good cause' was a matter of proscription, or conscription, as the case may be. If Billy McMahon (one of our ex prime ministers with an old fashion name), said 'Oi, Tommy, get over to Vietnam we've got a problem with some commies', then you promptly departed, with a good cause close to your heart! Better still, if you found out that it wasn't a good cause, you could simply blame the bloke that told you it was! Great system, caused a few wars, but hey, at least you weren't guilty of ignoring a 'good cause', you were simply misled, poor thing! So it's a different system, it's a system that has created kerbside Gordon Gecko's, who's fast tongue and pouting expressions reap a toll of guilt money straight from the unprepared pocket of passer-bys. Don't be mistaken, the chocolate shop it growing, and the flavours are becoming increasingly varied, layered in complexity and harder to comprehend. So we've compiled some of our own good causes, not your conventional type, but things that we think will be good for your soul. Ahhh!

KYU ALBUM LAUNCH

It's with intimate detail that Sydney two-piece kyu piece together their music. Freya Berkhout and Alyx Dennison have a distinct song craft that yields magnificent results, and a distinct style that intersperses vast soundscapes with vibrant melodies. It's pop as much as it is experimental, ornate as it is raw, classical and contemporary in equal parts.

A CURIOUS BESTIARY

Emerging Artist, Melbourne based Kaitlin Beckett, busts out of the mould to create some seriously interesting beasts Her twisted interpretation of mixing animal and mechanical leaves you wandering what is coming next from this talented artist.

"Since childhood I have had a love for the fantastic and the imaginary - I enjoy depicting the real and the unreal together, biomechanical juxtapositions, the unusual engaged with the everyday. The natural world, odd dreams, cryptozoology, literature and science fiction inspire me; and attachments, disguises, viscera and machinery are recurring themes in my bestiary. My characters invoke a sense of pathos, unease or humour, and I like to encourage others to invent their own narrative around my creatures."
