July, 2010

You learn a lot of stuff in the slammer. Too much time to think, you'd think we'd be more philosophical. Camus said something about having enough memories in one day to keep him alive. We're out now. Thirsty, and desperate to be outdoors. It is cold, but there are things like gloves and hip flasks and you can't just keep me in a box forever!

A friend once said to me - in Palestine the bombs never stopped us going out; in Melbourne, the weather doesn't stop us either. See some light at night in mid July, learn how to make yourself furniture from milk crates, hear music that makes you wish you'd been cool and learnt an instrument rather than go to Vic Kick. There's music at lunchtime? There's tomato sauce on a zombies face on a Wednesday night? No more of 'the hole' for me. I'm roaming the streets with the mug my mum gave me for Easter filled with mulled wine.

THE HIP HOP DON'T STOP

Every Saturday since the start of May, kids from the west have descended on the Footscray Community Arts Centre to be shown the ropes of Hip Hop elements, under the all-encompassing banner of the Hip Hop Academy.

Run by Aamer Rahman and Nazeem Hussain (from Fear of a Brown Planet), this free 10 week program offers young people the opportunity to work with some of Australia's best artists and performers.

There is breakdancing with Lama Roc from the Fresh Sox crew along with B-Girls Stash and Kaos, DJ Jumps from the Cat Empire on the decks, Pata Physics teaching production skills and MCing, and our very own Monkey teaching street art and graffiti writing.

Monkey says it's good to guide the kids in how to be an artist rather than being 'trash bags' and it's fun to see some of the wild ideas six or seven year olds can come up with.

"There's one kid who decided his graff name is going to be Wolf Boy, there's a 5 Cent Millionaire, Little 20 Cent and Kid S, so they're really embracing the mischievous side of street art and graffiti writing", says Monkey.

"We were painting characters and a six year old kid got up and said, 'I'm going to paint a condom with a nappy!".

The workshops give participants the opportunity to investigate issues of social discrimination and race relations, while having fun with things traditionally associated with getting in trouble. It's a positive step away from the social stigma associated with hip hop by providing a creative and constructive environment around successful, influential people.

"We just haven't told the kids that they can't get arrested till they're 16," says Monkey. Anyone can come along to get involved, share some skills or just hang with the crew for the last two sessions, which are on Saturday July 3 and July 10.

Academy 'graduates' get the chance to show off their newfound skills in a big Hip Hop Academy Super Jam in August to be held at Whitten Oval. Stay tuned.

KIT WEBSTER

I saw The Knife perform at Pukkelpop in Belgium in 2006 and was so inspired by their theatrical projections that I swore my destiny was in VJing. Kit Webster is the kind of kid who's turned his own rush into reality.

Since completing a Media/Sound Arts degree at RMIT University in 2008, Kit has been gaining international recognition for his creative combinations of digital projection and sound.

Kit is the feature artist of the upcoming Gertrude St Projection Festival and his works will be plastered all over the Gertrude Hotel from 6pm till Midnight for the duration of the festival.

Those of you who don't have epilepsy or a heart condition should also check out Sensory Overload which promises to explore the corners of your mind.

GERTRUDE ST PROJECTION FESTIVAL

And for those of you without a spare pink bit in your pocket, the rest of Gertrude Street will be transformed into a sober wonderland. Last year, I found myself staring at the shadow of a tree, sure I was having a flash back as the shadow turned into a monster, and then I noticed all the other locals watching too... Something in the water? Amazing moving light taking over the street.

Seriously, do not miss this. All through the street artists will be surprising you with projected works, so look around: there, everywhere.

HOW MUCH IS THAT ZOMBIE IN THE WINDOW?

Described by Roger Ebert as one of the best horror films ever made, Dawn of the Dead will be presented by the Melbourne Horror Film Society at the 1000 £ Bend cinema on June 30th.

George Romero's 1978 zombie classic is a horrific and hilarious satire of America's rabid consumerism whilst also changing the face of modern horror and zombie folklore. George Romero has cool glasses and just released a new film: Survival of the Dead which you should check out too.
