Australia didn’t ever get the chance to revel in the indie dream rock of Galaxie 500. Even though front man Dean Wareham walked out of the band 20 years ago, ending what was a short lived career for a band that seemed to have no aspirations beyond playing club dates, the group’s influence has grown in the intervening two decades, with a new generation of teenagers and 20 something hipsters discovering them. Relations between Wareham and his former bandmates remain frosty, so Wareham is touring under his own name, playing the songs of Galaxie 500. Joined by wife (and former Luna band mate) Britta Phillips on bass and backing vocals, as well as tour drummer Anthony Lamarca, the gig is a nostalgic but never cheesy trip through the band’s back catalogue. Focusing largely on their 1989 masterpiece On Fire and with several nods to the 1990 Blue Thunder EP, the band are cohesive and Wareham at times inspires a collective heart leaping in mouth moment as he aims for the high notes of recorded versions of the songs and amazingly, still makes them despite his voice having deepened significantly since his 20s. ‘When Will You Come Home’ is thus world weary rather than wistful as on record.

Live, the songs aren’t a dramatic departure from the versions so beloved of the crowd who are taking a moment out from important meetings the next morning or paying the babysitter when they get home, but the magic of Kramer’s idiosyncratic production work is evident, with the live sound not the aural soup and haze of the recorded versions. However, 20 odd years on, it is apparent that the charm is in the unique vocal delivery of Wareham. Indeed ‘Blue Thunder’ demonstrates that what were once characterised as Wareham’s vocal limitations are now his strength – the unique vocal incantations driving the melody.

‘Snowstorm’ remains eternally earnest in the charm of its unique vocal delivery, while ‘Decomposing Trees’ based on an acid trip the young Wareham too sounds a little quiet but live allows quite complex guitar lines to show through. Were two guitar lines can’t be easily recreated live by Wareham himself, Tor from support act The Sand Pebbles joins him onstage, such as for the childish innocence of 1988’s ‘Tugboat’ single. Phillips honeyed voice gets to take centre stage for a rendition of to kick off the encore , while a final encore of Joy Division/New Order’s ‘Ceremony’ is sublime, the druggy, woozy rendition of one of Ian Curtis’ final odes to death, life affirming in its simplicity.
